The gas operated contraction drive comprises a contraction sleeve (2) which undergoes a length contraction when a chamber (8) is pressurized by an operating gas. At least one pyrotechnic gas generator (13) produces the operating gas. The gas generator is electrically activated and is installed inside the pressurized chamber. The contraction sleeve has a sleeve body (3) consisting of a rubber elastic material, and stretched fiber arrangement (4) co-axial with the body and embedded into the wall of the body.
