The wheel head, preferably for construction machines, has a planetary gear with a fixed ring gear (7), an integrated brake (18) with a piston (11), holes (16) for the feed of hydraulic pressure medium into the piston chamber (12), and an externally accessible breather hole (26) for the piston chamber made directly near the piston. The breather hole is externally accessible through an oil-filling hole (23) in the cover (22) of the wheel head. An Independent claim is included for a procedure for the ventilation of the piston chamber of the hydraulic plate brake of the wheel head.
