The apparatus has lossy coding unit that codes an input audio signal to generate a lossy bit stream. A lossy signal-regenerating unit (210) decodes the bit stream and compares decoded signal with input signal to regenerate a lossy signal that is lost when lossy coding is done. A lossless coding unit codes the lossy signal and a unit (230) multiplexes the lossy with the lossless bit streams and generates an output bit stream.
