A preform composite moulding material which is used to make moulded components by curing under heat and pressure on a shaped moulding surface is made from a layer of fibrous reinforcing material (1), such as carbon fibre tows, with a first curable resin layer (2) which is applied to one face of the fibrous material. The resin of this first layer only partially impregnates the fibrous material whereby the opposite face is dry. A further resin layer (3) is applied to this opposite face so as to retain surface fibres in position. This further layer (3) is an openwork structure which is of lower weight than the first layer (2) and contains spaces through which the fibrous material is exposed. The openwork structure may be a grid structure with regular spaces, or broken parallel lines, or other arrangements (see figures 3 to 9).
|
