A staking tool comprises a tool body, a tool head movable relative to the tool body against a first spring to cause the tool head to apply a first force to the workpiece, a force applying member acting through a second spring to cause the tool head to move further relative to the body to apply a second force to the workpiece and sensing means responsive to the relative movement between the tool head and the tool body to render the force applying member inoperative upon the first and second forces reaching a predetermined aggregate value. The tool is used to insert stakes 84 into eyelets 82 in an insulating panel 80 to trap electrical heads (not shown) between the stakes and the eyelets. A base 10 and column 12 support a bracket 14 on which is mounted an air cylinder 16, the piston rod 22 of which is connected to a tool body 24. A plunger 54 is slidable inside the tool body 24 and is biased downwardly by a spring 58. An extension 28 of the tool body 24 guides a carrier 42 on which the staking head 52 is mounted. The staking head is downwardly biased by a spring 48 between the upper end of the carrier and a capnut 38 which screws into the extension 28. A rod 46 projecting upwardly from the carrier 42 completely fills a corresponding bore in the plunger 54 when the spring 48 is compressed as shown in Fig. 4. When there is no obstruction to its movement the carrier 42 is moved downwardly by the spring 48 until collar 44 abuts the shoulder 50. A micro-switch 64 is fixed to the tool body 24 and a switch-operating rod is carried by a lifting hook 66 attached to the carrier 42. Operation.-The hook 66 is lifted and the panel 80 moved to bring a stake 84 under the staking head 52. When the hook is released the spring moves the head 52 on to the stake with a force of up to 2 1bs. The air cylinder is then operated to move the entire tool body downwardly. If the spring 48 is not fully compressed then the carrier moves up into the extension 28, the spring 48 compressing until the rod 46 bottoms in its bore. At this point there is a gap " X " between the rod 68 and the micro-switch 64. Further movement of the piston-rod 22 causes the plunger 54 to move against the spring 58, until the rod 68 operates the micro-switch 64. The force necessary to deflect the spring 58 by the amount " X " is 10 lbs., so that the total force on the staking head 52 is 12 1bs.
