1365050 Non-spill battery vents TELEDYNE Inc 10 July 1973 [6 Oct 1972] 32929/73 Heading H1B A non-spill vent plug (e.g., for lead-acid aircraft batteries) has a threaded body portion divided into upper and lower chambers 16, 18, by a stepped shoulder 14 and provided with a snap-fit vented cover 20. A frusto-conical weight 32 normally rests on the shoulder and is adapted to pivot about its edge 34 when the plug reaches a certain tilt angle. As it pivots it raises the attached stem 40 and pulls the frusto-conical valve surface 46 against the sharp-edged seating. The valve stem is unitary and has a rigid lower portion 45 (achieved by the provision of three integral equispaced ribs 48) and a more flexible middle portion 43; this ensures that the stem moves cleanly through the aperture 24. The upper end of the stem has integrated collars 44, 42 to lock the stem to the weight when the stem is pushed and snapped into the base 38. The underside of the weight may be grooved to assist venting in the normal operative position. In case the gas pressure rises dangerously when the valve is closed the widened head is made of such shape and flexibility that it may be squeezed through the aperture 24 by the gas pressure and the stem and attached weight and the cover 20 blown out of the plug. The stem 40 may be of butyl rubber and the size of the head made such that it acts as a spray barrier during normal venting. |
