1364725 Mixing aparatus USM CORP 19 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 53723/71 Heading B1C [Also in Division B5] Mixing apparatus comprises a mixing chamber 2, Fig. 2, means, viz screw blades 6, to stuff material to be mixed into the chamber(s) 2. Mixer blades 9 having oppositelydirected portions and a discharge orifice 3 leading to means to control the egress of mixed material. This may in one embodiment be a screw type extruder 11..13, Fig. 1, driven by a variable-speed motor. The extruder screw may have different diameters along its length so as to effect a back pressure at the orifice 3 and a positive pressure at the extrusion orifice 15. The extruder may be obturated by a slider valve 16 until the mixing is adequate prior to extrusion. Alternatively the extruder screw may be initially locked in position. In a second embodiment the extruder portion includes a barrel 30, Fig. 4, and motor 32 mounted on a carriage 36 having wheels 38 riding on tracks 40. The top of the barrel 30 has a flat surface 42 which can slide along the bottom of the mixer barrel 44. The barrel 30 has ports 46 which register with a mixer discharge orifice 48. Unused ports are closed by plates 50 but one or other may be opened for degasification. Thus the usable length of the extruder screw 52 is selectable by positiong the mixer. In a third embodiment a gear pump 60..62..64, Fig. 11 is connected to the dischange orifice 66 of a mixer barrel 68. Automatic feeders 76 supply the mixer hopper 74, Fig. 9. The extruder or gear pump may be cnotrolled by sensing temperature, e.g. by a thermocouple 80, Fig. 2 which actuates a motor control mechanism. |
