Production of benzyl alcohols involves acid-catalyzed reaction of dibenzyl ethers (optionally mixed with benzyl alcohols) with formic acid, followed by catalytic fragmentation of the resulting benzyl formate. Production of benzyl alcohols of formula (I) involves acid-catalyzed reaction of dibenzyl ethers of formula (II) (optionally mixed with benzyl alcohols of formula (I)) with formic acid, followed by catalytic fragmentation of the resulting benzyl formate of formula (III).
