A beam index cathode ray tube includes a display screen, electron gun, and electromagnetic deflector. The display screen has linear phosphor stripes on its inner surface. The electron gun includes a cathode for providing energetic electrons; a beam forming region for forming the energetic electrons into spaced electron beams; and lens for focusing the electron beams on the display screen. A beam index cathode ray tube (CRT) includes a display screen, an electron gun, and an electromagnetic deflector. The display screen has linear phosphor stripes on its inner surface. The electron gun (10) includes a cathode (20, 22, 24) for providing energetic electrons; a beam forming region (BFR) (21) for forming the energetic electrons into spaced electron beams (44, 46, 48) each having an elongated cross-section; and lens (23) that is intermediate with the BFR and the display screen for focusing the electron beams on the display screen. The electromagnetic deflector is for deflecting the electron beams on the display screen in a raster pattern. The beams are offset from one another. Each electron beam is incident upon and each electron beam spot scans a respective color phosphor stripe.
