PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adjusting device for thickness of a filter chamber to be formed between an outer cylinder of a screw press and a screw shaft. SOLUTION: The filter chamber (5) is formed between the outer cylinder (2) of the screw press (1) and the screw shaft (4) thereof and the thickness for the filter chamber (5) is relatively reduced from the supply side of fluid toward the exhaust side of cake. A ribbon-shaped flexible member (7) having a uniform thickness is wound around the outer peripheral surface of the screw shaft (4), and the flexible member (7) is held on the screw shaft (4) at both the ends thereof with a pressing plate (11) and is fixed to the screw shaft (4) at adequate positions thereof. When the most preferable flexible member (7) having a different thickness is selected for replacement in accordance with variation of the state of sludge caused by seasonal conditions, the adequate thickness for the filter chamber is obtained and the compression ratio of the filter chamber (5) is achieved in accordance with the state of sludge of fluid.
