<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromelted spinel raw material which has a markedly higher corrosion resistance compared to that of an alumina raw material and a higher impact resistance and stress relaxation at elevated temperatures compared to those of a conventional high-purity spinel raw material and improves a performance of a refractory material made of spinel, magnesia-spinel, alumina- spinel, alumina-magnesia, etc., and the refractory material using this raw material. <P>SOLUTION: The electromelted spinel raw material has a composition comprising, by mass, ≥90% MgO and Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>in total, 5-25% MgO, 1-5% TiO<SB>2</SB>, 0.4-3% SiO<SB>2</SB>and ≤3% (including 0%) other ingredients, provided that a content ratio TiO<SB>2</SB>/SiO<SB>2</SB>is 1.2-4.
