An item (18) to be disinfected/sterilized is electrically earthed and is exposed to sprays of steam produced from water or another liquid, at temperatures above 50 ~C. The steam is imposed on the item (18) under the influence of an electrostatic field produced by a positive or negative electric pole, which through the use of static electric high potential forms an electric field shaped in relation to the electrically earthed item (18). The item (18) is disinfected/sterilized in a very short period of time which a minimum of energy consumption.
