PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adjust a platen gap between a recording head and a platen accurately by measuring the sheet surface position of a sheet on the platen with high accuracy. SOLUTION: In a platen gap adjusting mechanism 65 of a recorder for adjusting the platen gap between a recording head mounted on a carriage 19 and a platen 20 depending on the thickness of a sheet being fed to the recorder body by transmitting the driving force of a platen gap adjusting motor 66 to the carriage through a gear train 77 thereby moving the recording head toward the platen, the number of teeth of gears (a motor pinion 68, reduction gears 69, 70 and 71) is set in proportion to the number of phases of the platen gap adjusting motor.
