PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a barrier film having excellent barrier properties and good transparency, a method for producing the barrier film, and a laminated material, a packaging container, and an image display medium using the barrier film. SOLUTION: The barrier film has a barrier layer formed on at least one side of a base material film. The barrier layer is a silicon oxide film in which a ratio by the number of elements is expressed by Si:O:C=100:140-170:20-40, infrared absorption by Si-O-Si stretching vibration exists in a range of 1,060-1,090 cm<SP>-1</SP>, density is 2.6-2.8 g/cm<SP>3</SP>, and the distance between grains is 30 nm or below.
