METHOD FOR PRODUCING CANTHAXANTHIN

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive method for producing canthaxanthin with high safety by which the canthaxanthin can be stably supplied.

SOLUTION: Mutation is induced in a canthaxanthin-producing microorganism having a base sequence of a DNA corresponding to a 16S ribosome RNA, substantially homologous to a specific base sequence to provide the canthaxanthin- producing organism by selecting a mutant having a proportion (wt.%) of the produced canthaxanthin based on the whole production amount of carotinoids higher than that in the parent strain. The canthaxanthin or the carotenoid mixture containing the canthaxanthin is collected from the cultured product obtained by culturing the canthaxanthin-producing microorganism in the method for producing the canthaxanthin.
