PURPOSE: A method for automatically releasing a session of a video on demand system is provided to prevent waste of video information and a session, and efficiently use video signals and the session. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer initializes a value of a time counter(50). The microcomputer judges whether the value of the time counter gets to a threshold value(52). If not, the microcomputer adds the value of the time counter by 1(54). If so, it is judged whether a set-top box is in a power-off mode(56). If so, the microcomputer cuts off a power voltage applied to a tuner, a video decoder, and a modem(60). A subscriber scheduler judges whether a 'Be in Use' control message is received(62). If so, the subscriber scheduler initializes the value of the timer counter(64). If not, the subscriber scheduler judges whether the value of the time counter gets to a threshold value(66). If not, the subscriber scheduler adds the value of the time counter by 1(68). If so, the subscriber scheduler controls a video source not to generate a video signal to be transmitted to the set-top box not received from the 'Be in Use' control message(70). The subscriber scheduler controls a session managing unit for releasing a bandwidth and a session assigned to the set-top box not received from the 'Be in Use' control message(72).
