PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a barrier film having excellent barrier properties and good transparency, a method for producing the barrier film, and a laminated material, a packaging container, and an image display medium using the barrier film. SOLUTION: The barrier film has a barrier layer formed on at least one side of a base material film. The barrier layer is a silicon oxide nitride film in which a ratio by the number of elements is expressed by Si:O:N:C =100:60-90:60-90:20-40, the maximum peak of infrared absorption exists in a range of 820-930 cm-1, film density is 2.9-3.2 g/cm3, and the distance between grains is 30 nm or below.
