The particles have an average diameter of from 10 microns to 50 microns and a bulk density of from 0À05 to 0À50 g./c.c. The carbon or graphite foam is prepared by mixing the hollow spherical particles of carbon with a foamable synthetic resin, foaming the mixture and baking the mixture to carbonize or graphitize the mixture. Preferably 5-90 parts by weight of the hollow particles are added to 100 parts by weight of resin. The baking step may be carried out in an inert atmosphere, at a temperature in the range of from 1000‹ to 3000‹ C. The synthetic resin may be a bi-liquid urethane resin system or a movolak phenolic resin powder. |
