PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new aromatic compound for providing an organic electroluminescent element which has a high emission luminance, luminous efficiency and color purity, emits a blue light and has an excellent high- temperature stability and a long life and the organic electroluminescent element using the compound. SOLUTION: The new aromatic compound has an anthracene skeleton and an asymmetric molecular structure. In the organic electroluminescent element in which an organic thin film layer composed of one layer or a plurality of layers containing at least one luminous layer is laid between a cathode and an anode, at least one layer of the organic thin film layer contains the aromatic compound as a single component or a component of a mixture to give the organic electroluminescent element.
