PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new huperzine A derivative and to provide use of the derivative as a choline esterase inhibitor. SOLUTION: The huperzine A derivative is represented by formula (II), [wherein Y is C=O and R" is hydrogen or a 1-5C alkyl or Y and R" together form CH; R is represented by formula (III) (wherein n is 0 or 1, X is H, a 1-5C alkyl, a 1-5C alkyloxy, nitro, a halogen, carboxy, an alkyloxycarbonyl, hydroxymethyl, hydroxy or an amino substituted by a bis-1-5C alkyl); R' is hydrogen, a 1-5C alkyl or pyridoyl or a benzoyl substituted by a 1-5C alkyloxy, with the proviso that a compound wherein Y and R" together form CH; R is represented by formula (IV) (Z is a halogen or nitro); R' is hydrogen is excluded.
