<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel economy and exhaust gas performance so that engine output is retained in a specific state or can be slowly changed along the best fuel consumption curve. <P>SOLUTION: An engine output shaft 2a is connected to a ring gear R of a planetary gear 6, a motor generator 5 is connected to a sun gear S, and a carrier CR that becomes an output member is connected to an input shaft 7a of a continuously variable transmission 7. While the output of a combustion engine 2 is being retained in a specific state, the output of the motor generator 5 is controlled by adding to or subtracting from the combustion engine so that the requested output of a vehicle can be met by changing an engine speed while the carrier CR is at constant torque.
