The towing bar for motor cars is fitted to the vehicle on a carrier bracket. The tow bar (1) is fitted in a union joint consisting of a half shell (3) in the form of a flat plate whose edges are bent upwards and has, at the rear a trough (12) where the half shell is welded to the central strut of the carrier bracket, which can consist of one or two strut tubes of circular or rectangular cross section, and a stamped retaining shell (6) whose thin wall is reinforced by a flange at each end. The retaining shell (6) fits round the tow bar (1) and its trough is the same depth as the diameter of the bar so that when the shell (6) is bolted to the half shell (3) it forms a rigid coupling.
