1512497 Preparation of aniline; o-toluidine and phenylpropionic acid by reduction RUHRCHEMIE AG 2 July 1976 [10 July 1975] 27709/76 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Aniline, o-toluidine and phenylpropionic acid are prepared by reduction of nitrobenzene, onitrotoluene and cinnamic acid respectively with H 2 in the presence of a palladium on charcoal catalyst made by separately but simultaneously adding a 0À1-2N alkali metal hydroxide solution and a palladium salt solution containing 0À1-5 wt. per cent Pd to a suspension of charcoal in water, the pH of the suspension being maintained between 7À5 and 11À0 and the temperature below 20‹ C. during the additions, separating the charcoal from the suspension and drying it at elevated temperature.
