PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of linear polarization of luminous flux emitted by a light source and to improve the use efficiency of luminous flux of an integrator optical system. SOLUTION: The luminous flux emitted by the light source 4 is reflected by a reflector 1 or a front mirror 3 and the reflector 1, and then transmitted through a window 2 of the front mirror 3 and projected toward the integrator optical system 11 to increase the use efficiency of the luminous flux of the integrator optical system 11. Further, the external shape size of an input part of the integrator optical system 11 can be made as large as the size of the window 2 and then the integrator optical system 11 is made small-sized. Further, a 1/4-wavelength plate 18 and a wire grid polarizer 19 are provided on the optical path of the luminous flux traveling toward the integrator optical system 11 and then the efficiency of linear polarization of the luminous flux entering the integrator optical system 11 after being emitted by the light source 4 into linear polarized light is increased.
