PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear actuator, wherein the magnetic flux produced by permanent magnets is effectively utilized to move a mover and the mover is caused to produce thrust sufficiently and stably. SOLUTION: The linear actuator comprises a stator 12; the mover 13 which has iron pieces 32 and is installed on the stator 12 so that the mover can reciprocate; first permanent magnets 14, which are installed on the stator 12 so that the permanent magnets are placed opposed to the iron pieces 32 and the magnetic poles thereof are arranged in the reciprocating direction; a pair of magnetic pole members 22 and 23 installed on both sides of the first permanent magnets 14 in the reciprocating direction and a coil 15 installed on the stator 12. Second permanent magnets 50 are placed between the magnetic pole members 22 and 23 and the stator 12. The magnetic poles of the second permanent magnets 50 are arranged, in such a direction that they make magnetic reluctance to a magnetic flux loop formed in the stator 12, the first permanent magnets 14, and a pair of the magnetic pole members 22 and 23.
