PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder injection spark ignition internal combustion engine for improving fuel consumption at cold starting time.

SOLUTION: An engine 1 ignites and burns fuel by a spark plug 17 by injecting the fuel into a combustion chamber 13 by an injector 43, and introduces EGR by increasing an overlap quantity of an intake valve 23 and an exhaust valve 24 by operating a variable valve system 2 at cold starting time, and injects the fuel from the injector 43 in a compression stroke.
