PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct an illumination eclipse due to a scale, and to virtually homogeneously hold the quantity of light on a CCD image plane. SOLUTION: A scanner has an original platen for placing an original, the scale which regulates a position to place the original, and a xenon lamp 22 which illuminates the original. The light of the Xe lamp 22 reflected from the original abutted on the scale is converged by an image forming lens on a line sensor which photoelectrically converts the incident light to read the original image. The light emitting length of the xenon lamp 22 is made longer than an effective image region width on the original platen, the first peak of light quantity distribution is located outside the scale tip part, the second peak of light quantity distribution is located outside the original platen of the other end, and the light quantity of the first peak is set into not less than 110% of the light quantity of the second peak.
