PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize recording power in a recordable optical disk unit. SOLUTION: An embossed part of an optical disk 100 is reproduced by an optical pickup part 12. A modulation factor me of the embossed part is calculated by a modulation factor calculation part 14c from the reproduced RF signals. Test data are recorded by variously changing the recording power in a test area, and the modulation factor m is detected from the sequentially reproduced RF signals. A control part 14 sets a target modulation factor on the basis of the me which is the modulation factor of the embossed part, and selects a recording power providing the target modulation factor as the optimum recording power.
