PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an array antenna device such as an ESPAR (Electronically Steerable Passive Array Radiator) antenna device having a narrower beam width and a higher gain than those of a conventional technology. SOLUTION: An array antenna device is provided with: an exciting element A0 for transmitting/receiving a radio signal; N<SB>1</SB>pieces of first non-exciting elements A1 to A6 provided so as to be isolated from the exciting element A0 by a prescribed first interval; N<SB>2</SB>pieces of second non-exciting elements A7 to A18 provided so as to be isolated from the exciting element A0 by a second interval longer than the first interval, wherein N<SB>2</SB>is twice or more as large as N<SB>1</SB>; and a plurality of variable reactance circuits 12-1 to 12-6 connected to the plurality of first non-exciting elements A1 to A6. An adaptive control type controller 20 changes the reactance values of the respective variable reactance circuits 12-1 to 12-6 to operate the first non-exciting elements A1 to A6 as waveguides or reflectors and changes the directivity characteristics to operate the second non-exciting elements A7 to A18 as waveguides.
