PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of easily designing a thermoelectric device and a semiconductor laser module having predetermined characteristics in a short period and in a lower cost. SOLUTION: Various heat-radiating characteristics (the temperature of a package 8, the temperature of a heater 5, the amount of heat generated by the heater 5, the current of thermoelectric cooling device 10, a voltage impressed on the thermoelectric cooling device 10) are obtained by making the existing thermoelectric cooling device 10 operate. Based on these values obtained and the existing values (the number of pellets 4, a cross-sectional area, and the length or the like), physical constant values of material (Seebeck coefficient of the pellet 4, thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity) are calculated with simulation by a finite element method using a finite element model formed of a three-dimensional mesh. Using these calculated physical constants, three- dimensional finite element models of the thermoelectric cooling devices of various materials and shapes are formed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
