PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that if a field sequential liquid crystal display device is used at a place where the intensity of illumination of external light is high, color display of high saturation can not be performed. SOLUTION: In this field sequential liquid crystal display device, a backlight system consisting of a light source part emitting light beams of three colors of red, green and blue and capable of independently controlling the color beams, a light guide plate guiding the light beams emitted by the light source part and a reflection plate disposed at the lower part of the light guide plate, a color shutter capable of respectively dividing the external light into three colors of red, green and blue and an image display liquid crystal shutter controlling light transmittance and positioned between the color shutter and the light guide plate are disposed.
