An economizer in the cistern opens the water outlet opening (6) for a relatively brief time only to re-close the outlet without chain pull by user. The economizer consists of a piston and cylinder unit (3) fixed rigidly to the stand pipe (2a) and with a lifter valve (2). When the stand pipe is raised so is the piston of unit (3) to admit water to the cylinder. As the piston rises so the water flows through hole (6) into the cylinder and then as the piston descends along with the stand pipe, a plastics disk (8) blanks off the inlet holes (6) and the cylinder contents flow out through smaller diameter holes (10) in retarded flow.
