An automatic transmission, wherein a reduced rotation outputting means for outputting a reduced rotation obtained by reducing the rotational speed of an input shaft is disposed on the axial one side of a planetary gear unit, first and second clutches installed between the second and third rotating elements and the input shaft of the planetary gear unit are disposed on the axial other side of the planetary gear unit, and output members are disposed between the first and second clutches and the planetary gear unit, whereby the reduced rotation outputting means and the planetary gear unit can be disposed in proximity to each other, and a transmission member for transmitting the reduced rotation outputted from the reduced rotation outputting means to the planetary gear unit can be shortened.
