Printed sheets to be aligned one after the other are, after separation, first positioned and then perforated along their lengthwise edges. The sheets are aligned by means of the perforations and finally joined by hot-sealing along their transverse edges. The individual printed sheets, after perforation by stamping, are positioned one after the other during a first operation, using the printed image and without regard to the sheet edges, using marginal datum marks running parallel to the image printed. The datum mark positions are detected photo-electrically. During a subsequent operation, two sheets perforated along the lengthwise edges are joined together along their transverse edges, without overlapping.
