The voltages across 2 equal ohmic resistances (12,13) in parallel bridge arms (6,7) of the H-bridge circuit containing the load (2) are supplied to respective inputs of a difference amplifier (14), for providing a difference signal at the amplifier output (15) which is proportional to the load current. The amplifier output is coupled to a variable amplifier (16), its control input (19) supplied with a control signal for halving the amplification in free-running operation of the H-bridge circuit with current circulation through the load and both ohmic resistances.
