A modem receiver has an equalizer (20) which receives an input signal, an adaptive compensator (40), and a decision block (30) which generates a decision (53) related to the input signal. A difference (51) between an output (47) of the equalizer (20) and a compensating signal output (49) of the adaptive compensator (40) provides an input for the decision block (30). A difference (55) between the output (47) of the equalizer (20) and an output (53) of the decision block (30) provides an error estimation signal which is a first input to the adaptive compensator (40). A difference (57) between the input (51) to the decision block (30) and the output (53) of the decision block provides an error adaptation signal which is a second input to the adaptive compensator (40).
