A two-symbol parity is generated from four-symbol data. These six symbols are subjected to EFM modulation and 8 bits of each symbol are converted into a 14-bit pattern. Two symbols are rewritten in the pit/land string formed on a disc. One of them is originally (0 x 40). By performing additional recording to the pit/land string, the pit length is increased. The 14-bit data reproduced is converted into 8-bit data at the reproduction side. That is, the original data (0 x 40) is rewritten to (0 x 22). The parity is also modified so that the additionally recorded data symbol (0 x 22) will not be detected as an error.
