Electrochemical synthesis comprises electrochemical oxidation of organic starting compound to organic compound on a graphite, carbon black or carbon anode (anode I) with specified metal cathode (cathode I); and pre-roughening anode I by operating as cathode (cathode II) to generate hydrogen with charge of 0.01-100 F and using electrolytes Electrochemical synthesis comprises (I) producing an organic compound (Z) by electrochemical oxidation of an organic starting compound (A) on a graphite, carbon black or carbon anode (anode I) using a cathode (cathode I) of stainless steel, a sub-group 1, 2, 6, 7 or 8 metal, lead, tin or rhenium (metal M); and (II) pre-roughening the electrode acting as anode I by operating it as cathode (cathode II), at which hydrogen is generated with a charge of 0.01-100 F, then reversing the polarity of cathode II to anode I. The compositions of the electrolytes used are selected so that a mixture of all mixing components of electrolytes I and II, up to any conductive salt present, has a dielectric constant less than 20.
