Shim case (13) for an NMR instrument is designed for insertion in a shim case recess (12) that has a cross section corresponding to an annular section (17). The shim case has at least one rectangular-shaped shim pocket for storage of individual shims. The shim case is shaped so that it will just fit within the annular section, i.e. so that it contacts the perimeter of the recess in exactly three positions. The invention also relates to a corresponding gradient coil system that accepts an inventive shim case and a magnetic resonance instrument that employs such a case.
