A process for sorting out valuable components from different or pre-sorted components, comprises placing the material in layers or as a heap on a table or advancing surface, irradiating the material with light of a predetermined wavelength, analyzing the reflected light optoelectronically for valuable components, and then moving the components to a storage area. The material can consist of metal, glass, rubber, hard and soft plastics, laminar components, etc. The sorting unit (3) has a stationary or portable detector unit (5) with at least one flexible light guide cable (6) with a screw or plug connection (7), and a sorting glove (4). The detector and the glove are connected to the light guide, and the light guide is partly integrated with the glove. The storage areas are fitted with optical and/or acoustic signal units (12). The detector unit contains a wide band infra red generator, a spectrometer optical unit, and a control and analysis unit.
