Prodn. of 2-thiomorpholino-benzothiazole of formula (I) comprises reacting 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (IIa) or dibenzthiazolyl disulphide (IIb) with >=8 times the stoichiometric amt. of morpholine using H2O2 as oxidising agent. The initial concn. of water in the reaction mixt. is not >15, esp. 10 wt.% Pref. 9-25 molar excess morpholine is used and the water content of the H2O2 used is not >85 wt.% using (IIa) or 95 wt.% using (IIb). Pref. the prod. is isolated (a) by evapn. of solvent down to solvent reaction prod. wt. ratio 1:1, or (b) by dissolving the mixt. in a water-immiscible solvent then extracting the morpholine with water. (I) is a known vulcanisation accelerator, soil fungicide and antioxidant for lube oils and polyolefins. Large excesses of morpholine improve the yield and water is the only by-prod.
