The mechanism winds a carbon fibre tape (14,16) onto cylindrical shank (12) of transformer etc. in overlapping manner and contains a support element (60), movable in shank axial direction, with shank surrounding ring. The ring is rotatable in plane orthogonal to shank longitudinal axis, carrying a tape coil (18,20) and one or more brake and deflection rollers (24,26,28,52,54). At least one brake roller is mechanically coupled to hydraulic pump (46) and drives the pump hydraulic circuit, in which fluid pressure is adjustable for tensile force.
