A method of designing a drill bit which comprises selecting a core material 76', selecting a bit crown material 13, configuring a hollow bit crown to be fabricated of the bit crown material where the hollow bit crown has a thickness sufficient to maintain a configuration as a quantity of molten core material is disposed therein. The bit crown material may be formed from a mixture of particulate material and infiltrant material.
