PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for detecting a sector synchronous signal of an optical recording medium are provided to record/reproduce data on/from the optical recording medium correctly. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for detecting a sector synchronous signal of an optical recording medium includes a frame synchronous bit detector(524), a synchronous detector(530), and a synchronous detection result output unit. The frame synchronous bit detector detects a frame synchronous bit from a land pre-pit signal on the optical recording medium. The synchronous detector judges continuity in the detection of the frame synchronous bit to detect a sector synchronous signal in 6-bit window length or 3-bit window length. The synchronous detection result output unit predicts a synchronous detection cycle and outputs the result when the frame synchronous bit and synchronous signal are continuously detected. The synchronous detection result output unit counts a new synchronous detection cycle together with the synchronous detection signal whenever the synchronous detector detects the synchronous signal.
