A vehicle speed control system comprises a sensor 11, which is adjustable with respect to a radiation characteristic, and a control unit 10 to enable the regulation of vehicle speed in response to signals from the sensor 11. The control unit 10 is provided, prior to a predetermined initial operation of the system, with information 16 which causes the unit 10 to inhibit the operation of the system before the sensor 11 has been adjusted. The information 16 may be coded to allow distinction between adjusted and non-adjusted states of the sensor 11. The control unit 10 may comprise a computer, and the information 16 may be provided in a computer program.
