An automotive direct-injection spark ignition i.c. engine is fuelled by a premixed solution of LPG and gasoline dissolved into one another. The fuel solution has a predetermined LPG/gasoline ratio such that the critical temperature of the solution is higher than the in-situ working temperature of the fuel in order to accommodate the fuel in liquid phase at all locations within the fuel system before the fuel is injected to the engine during normal operation of the vehicle. Conversely, given the predetermined critical temperature of the fuel solution, the invention enables the vehicle to be designed for more robust operation at lower cost, optimised such that the in- situ working temperature of the fuel is lower than the critical temperature of the fuel solution, the latter being substantially higher than that for LPG. The LPG/gasoline fuel solution may be premixed and refuelled to the vehicle, or mixed on-board the vehicle from neat LPG and neat gasoline before it is delivered to the engine. |
