Providing a process for operating an apparatus for producing hydrogen comprises adding hydrocarbon gas and water in the stationary operation to an allothermally working reformer (1) via a pre-heated duct feed path (2) to form hydrogen and further reformer products. A catalyst unit (3) is connected to the reformer to chemically prepare the reformer product. Sufficient water is added to the reformer to start the apparatus until the reformer and the catalyst unit have reached the operating temperature. n Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the process. Preferred Features: The water is added to the reformer in the start phase via the pre-heated educt feed path. The water is vaporized before it enters the reformer. The reformer and/or the catalyst unit are coated with a precious metal.
