PURPOSE: A method for selectively transmitting a caller ID in a private exchange is provided to receive an accurate caller ID in a termination side by directly registering the caller ID in a database and operating the caller ID. CONSTITUTION: An operator of a private exchange collects separate caller ID information from subscribers, registers the collected caller IDs in a database, and registers local numbers and extension numbers, which are used in subscriber telephones, in the database(S1). If a subscriber attempts an external call(S2), a control unit of the private exchange judges whether the subscriber wants to transmit an extension number of the subscriber(S3). If the subscriber wants to transmit the extension number of the subscriber, the control unit combines a local number, a separate caller ID and the extension number(S4). The control unit transmits the combined caller ID to a remote station(S5). If the subscriber does not want to transmit the extension number of the subscriber, the control unit combines the local number and the separate caller ID(S6) and transmits the combined caller ID to the remote station(S5).
