Use of impregnated plastic as dielectric in - condensers

The principal patent Belgian 708,428, describes a condenser containing as dielectric sheets of a plastic material which have been swollen with an insulated oil so that the free space, e.g. between the dielectric and the armature, is reduced. Ideally the volume of the swollen material should equal the total volume of the insulating oil and the unswollen plastic. Preferred impregnants are now mineral oils, silicone oils and fluorinated hydrocarbons. The plastic is especially polypropylene.
