PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate a cutter by a motor with a small power in a printer having a cutter mechanism, to commonly use the motor as a paper feeding motor, to reduce the number of components and to simplify the structure. SOLUTION: This method of controlling the cutter comprises a process (S2304-2310) for driving the motor 34 in the direction B according to a continuous paper cutting command and allowing the cutter mechanism 19a to perform the cutting, operation by the engagement of a planet gear 42 for the cutter with a transfer gear 39 for the cutter and a process (S2305-S2308) for changing the driving speed by judging the operating position of the cutter mechanism 19a.
